Tui T. Sutherland's Wings of Fire universe is one of the deepest middle grade fantasy series of the modern era โ€” 21 main books, four companion Winglets, two standalone Legends, and a parallel graphic novel adaptation. For a tween reader who falls in love with dragon clans, palace intrigue, and prophecy, this is hundreds of hours of reading they'll devour. Here's the complete reading order. The main series โ€” 21 books, three arcs of 5โ€“7

The main series breaks into three connected arcs, each focusing on a different generation of dragonets fulfilling prophecies and reshaping the world of Pyrrhia. Read in publication order โ€” Sutherland builds the world steadily and each arc plays better when you've read the previous one.

Arc 1: The Dragonet Prophecy (Amazon) (Books 1โ€“5)

Five young dragons are prophesied to end a generations-long war between the queens of three SandWing sisters. Found family, distinct dragon clans, and the original cast tweens fall in love with.

  2. The Lost Heir (Amazon) (2013)
  3. The Hidden Kingdom (Amazon) (2013)

  5. The Brightest Night (Amazon) (2014)

The Winglets (companion short stories)

Five shorter companion books (~50 pages each) that fill in side characters and minor plotlines from the main series. Best read in order, alongside or just after the main series. They're inexpensive ebooks, great for between-book transitions.

  1. Prisoners (between Books 5 and 6) โ€” Amazon
  2. Assassin โ€” Amazon
  3. Deserter โ€” Amazon
  4. Runaway โ€” Amazon
  5. Hero โ€” also includes a sneak peek at Wings of Fire #16, The Hybrid Prince. Amazon

The graphic novel adaptations

Each main-series book gets a graphic novel adaptation by various artists (Mike Holmes does the bulk). The art is gorgeous, the dragon characters are distinct and expressive, and the pacing keeps the original books' epic feel. Excellent for reluctant readers โ€” many tweens enter the world here and then graduate to the prose series.

The graphic novel adaptations follow the main series order. Currently published adaptations cover most of Arc 1 and into Arc 2.

The recommended reading order โ€” short version

If you just want the cleanest single path through:

  1. Main series Books 1โ€“10 (Arcs 1 and 2)
  2. The Winglets (any time after Book 5)
  3. Darkstalker (Legends) after Book 9
  4. Main series Books 11โ€“15 (Arc 3)
  5. Dragonslayer (Legends) any time
  6. Main series Books 16+ (newest)

How to start a brand-new reader

The single best entry point: The Dragonet Prophecy (Book 1). It's the start of Arc 1 and introduces all the core worldbuilding gradually. If your reader is hesitant about a 21-book commitment, start with the graphic novel of The Dragonet Prophecy instead โ€” it's the same story with stunning visuals, and most readers immediately want the prose version after finishing.

Why Wings of Fire works so well for tweens

Sutherland respects her audience. The dragons fight, scheme, lose people they love, navigate complicated palace politics, and confront moral ambiguity โ€” but always in a register appropriate for the 9โ€“12 age band. Each dragon clan has a distinct culture, magic system, and aesthetic, which gives readers tribes to identify with (the Wings of Fire fandom is full of "which tribe are you?" discourse). And the prophecies actually pay off โ€” each arc resolves, then a new one begins. That makes it both binge-worthy and rewarding to keep up with.
