Twelve is the year the family movie night gets harder to plan. Kids this age can follow adult story structure, want characters with real problems, and have started noticing when a film is condescending to them. These hold up to that scrutiny.
Turning Red (2022, PG)
Thirteen-year-old Meilin turns into a giant red panda whenever she gets overexcited. It is explicitly about puberty, embarrassment and a mother who cannot let go, and it is one of the very few films that treats a twelve-year-old girl’s inner life as inherently interesting rather than a phase to get through.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023, PG)
Bigger, stranger and more emotionally complicated than the first. Miles is told his story has to go a certain way and refuses. Worth knowing it ends on a cliffhanger, which is either fine or infuriating depending on the twelve-year-old.

Wonder (2017, PG)
Auggie Pullman, born with a facial difference, starts fifth grade at a mainstream school. What makes it work is the structure — it hands the point of view to his sister, his sister’s friend, his own friend. Twelve is the right age to notice that trick and what it is doing.
Inside Out 2 (2024, PG)
Riley is thirteen and Anxiety has moved into headquarters. If the first film gave a younger child language for sadness, this one gives an older one language for the anxious spiral, and it is unusually precise about how that feels from the inside.

School of Rock (2003, PG-13)
A failed musician fakes his way into a substitute teaching job and turns a class of ten-year-olds into a band. The PG-13 is for language rather than anything else. Jack Black is doing something genuinely generous here — the joke is never on the kids.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021, PG)
Holds up better at twelve than eleven, because the daughter’s frustration with her father reads as recognizable rather than abstract. Also one of the funniest scripts in modern animation.

Hugo (2011, PG)
Martin Scorsese’s film about an orphan living in the walls of a Paris railway station, and about the birth of cinema itself. Slower than anything else here, and the twelve-year-olds it clicks with tend to remember it for years. Worth trying on a rainy afternoon rather than a Friday night.
Holes (2003, PG)
Stanley Yelnats is sent to a juvenile camp in the desert where the boys dig holes all day and nobody will say why. The three timelines braid together beautifully, and it is one of the few adaptations that is as good as the novel — which is itself a middle grade staple.
Coraline (2009, PG)
A girl finds a door to a better version of her family, and the price of staying. Properly frightening, and the PG is doing a lot of work — check your own twelve-year-old’s tolerance for stop-motion dread before committing. The ones who can take it love it.
Spirited Away (2001, PG)
Chihiro is trapped in a bathhouse for spirits and has to work to free her parents. Studio Ghibli’s dream logic asks the viewer to sit with not understanding everything, which twelve is old enough to enjoy rather than resist. Subtitled or dubbed both work.
