Eleven is a turning point. Straight kids' movies start feeling babyish, but a lot of PG-13 is still too much — not because of anything graphic, just because the emotional register is off. The films below sit in that gap. They take an eleven-year-old seriously without asking them to be older than they are.
Inside Out (2015, G)
Pixar personifies the emotions inside an eleven-year-old girl’s head as she moves across the country and falls apart quietly. It is the rare film that gives a child language for their own interior life — the idea that sadness has a job to do lands harder at eleven than at almost any other age.
Encanto (2021, PG)
Mirabel is the only member of a magical Colombian family who was never given a gift. The songs get the attention, but the reason it holds up is that it is really about a family that cannot talk about its own pressure — a theme eleven-year-olds recognize instantly.
How to Train Your Dragon (2010, PG)
A Viking boy who is bad at being a Viking befriends the dragon he was supposed to kill. Genuinely thrilling flight sequences, a hero who wins by being observant rather than strong, and an ending that costs him something real.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018, PG)
Miles Morales is thirteen in the film, which makes him exactly the aspirational half-step older that an eleven-year-old wants. The animation is unlike anything else, and the message — anyone can wear the mask — is delivered without a speech.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021, PG)
A road trip to drop a daughter at film school turns into a robot apocalypse. Very funny, very fast, and underneath it a father and daughter who do not understand each other’s worlds. Good for a family watch where everyone is laughing at different things.

Luca (2021, PG)
Two sea monsters pass as human boys for one summer on the Italian Riviera. Lower stakes than most of this list, which is the point — it is a film about friendship and one perfect summer, and it is beautiful to look at.
Moana (2016, PG)
A wayfinder’s daughter sails past the reef against her father’s wishes. Strong adventure structure, no romance plot at all, and a lead whose competence is the point. If it lands, Moana 2 follows on directly.
The Sandlot (1993, PG)
A summer of neighborhood baseball in 1962. Nothing much happens and that is the appeal — it is about a kid who does not fit in finding a group that will have him. Parents who grew up with it tend to enjoy the rewatch more than the kids do, which is its own kind of win.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010, PG)
Greg Heffley navigates middle school badly. If your reader already knows the books, the live-action version is a comfortable evening; if they don’t, it is a decent way in.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001, PG)
The first film is the gentlest of the eight and the right place to start at eleven — the same age Harry is. The series darkens quickly from the fourth film on, so treat this as one film rather than a commitment to all of them. Our reading order guide covers the books.

A note on ratings
PG covers an enormous range at this age. Finding Nemo and School of Rock are both rated for children and are completely different propositions. If you are unsure, the useful question is not the rating but whether the film expects the viewer to have had their heart broken yet. At eleven, mostly not.
